Microsoft Flight Simulator – How to Configure and Connect Controller (Joystick, Yoke, Etc.)

A guide on how to connect a Controller (Joystick, Yoke, Etc.) to Microsoft Flight Simulator and configure it.

How to Configure and Connect Controller (Joystick, Yoke, Etc.)

Step 1: Plug in your Yoke or Joystick or Controller and make sure it has met all requirements needed to operate it.

Step 2: Download the correct drivers for it, especially older ones that were intended for Flight Simulator X.

Step 3: Open Flight Simulator

Step 4: Once in, it should give you an alert that it has detected a new controller. If this is newer controller it should give you a preset that has automatically assigned all functions. If this isn’t the case, or there is something wrong, head onto Step 5

Step 5: If you are using an older controller, you will probably have to configure it like I had to, no worries, it’s simple. In the bottom left there should be a little box that says “Assigned” go ahead and click the arrow and switch it to “Essential”

Step 6: From here, you can look through all functions. To assign an input to a certain function, find the one you want and press first box to the right of it. A little menu should pop up, in the top box you can perform the input you want, and it will select the what input you just put in. From there, you can do this with every function, and assign everything.

  1. Thanks for the tips.
My Yoke is not recognized by MSFS by default so I have to configure it myself. Do you have any idea where the configured Controls data are saved on the PC?
    Thanks
